City Council
The City of Nassau Bay has a Council-Manager form of government.
A Mayor and six City Council Members are elected to staggered two-year
terms. City Council meets once a month and conducts the policy business
of the City.

Donald
C. Matter, Mayor, has lived in Nassau Bay since 1971. He has
been active in many areas during his past series of
terms with the City and these same issues remain as his objectives:
flood remediation, FEMA enhancements, infrastructure repairs
and upgrades, street replacements in Swan Lagoon and Harbor
Martinique with Harris County funding, economic development
NASA Parkway upgrades, dredging, forward looking financial
planning and cost containment. High on the priority list is
the redevelopment of the commercial district and multi-family
dwellings. Don is a vice-president for Clean Harbors, Inc. with
responsibility for plant operations in Texas, Utah, and Nebraska.
Don and
Sherry have three children and two grandsons.

John Haugen |

John Haugen has lived in Nassau Bay for 40 years. His interests
on City Council include the redevelopment of the commercial
and residential areas of the city. John is an architect. He
and his wife Norma have two children, a daughter Jacqueline
and a son Kenneth.

Bette
Johnson |

Mayor Pro Tem Bette Johnson has lived in Nassau Bay since 1976. Her areas of concern are redevelopment of our residential and commercial areas, continued enhancement of NASA Parkway, continued support for our excellent police, fire and EMS services, and tax reduction for residents. Bette volunteered with Nassau Bay EMS for 25 years. She is a Master Reading Recovery teacher at McWhirter Professional Development Lab School in Webster, where she has taught for 20 years. Bette is an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Nassau Bay. She and her husband, former Mayor Don Johnson, are awaiting the arrival of their sixth grandchild in March.

Ron Swofford |

Ron Swofford has been a resident of Nassau Bay since 1967.
He recently served the City as chairman of the Charter Review
Commission. Ron received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the
University of Illinois and an M.S. in Engineering Administration
from Washington University. Since retirement from Shell Oil
Company in 1995, he has kept busy as a volunteer with the Executive
Service Corps of Houston, providing free management consulting
to nonprofit organizations. He was appointed to Council on
July 12th to fill an unexpired term. He and his wife, Carol,
have four children and five grandchildren.

Mark
Denman |

Councilmember Mark Denman is a 20-year resident of Nassau
Bay and has served on the Dredging Sub-Committee for 8 years
(2 of them as chairman), the Planning Commission for 2 years,
and he is currently serving on the Economic Development Corporation
(EDC) as treasurer. He is a board member of the Bay Area Houston
Convention and Visitors Bureau where he is chair of the audit
committee and a member of the marketing committee. He has also
co-chaired Beautification Day for the last two years. His areas
of interest include infrastructure repairs (especially dredging)
and city beautification (especially all waterfront areas including
our peninsula). Mark graduated with a bachelor of arts in general
business from Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. His is the VP,
Sales and Operations of Texmati Rice in Alvin, Texas. He and
his wife Diana have a daughter, Allison.

Braun |

David Braun has lived in Nassau Bay since 1986. He has a degree in Marketing from UH Clear Lake. Prior to being elected to Council, he served on the Parks and Recreation Committee and on the Planning and Zoning Commission. He works for Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership as an Aerospace Marketing Manager. His areas of interest on Council include the Street Sub-committee, implementing the city’s park master plan and redevelopment of the City's commercial and retail districts. “With the NASA Parkway Bypass nearing completion, there isn’t a better time for redevelopment activity within our City”. He's an active volunteer with the Nauticat Swim Team and at St. Paul's Catholic Church. His wife Angela teaches school at St Thomas School in Nassau Bay and his son Michael attends Clear Creek High School where he is a member of the water polo and swim team.
